The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is the apex body of revenue administration. It was formed by Presidential Order No – 76 of 1972. Administratively the National Board of Revenue is administered under the Department of Inland Resources of the Ministry of Finance. The Secretary of Internal Resources is ex-officio Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer of Jarabo.The main responsibility of the National Board of Revenue is to make rules related to customs, income tax and value added tax and collect appropriate tax revenue in light thereof. Apart from this, representation in any matter related to anti-smuggling, execution of international agreements related to customs and taxation and fiscal policy of the government. The National Board of Revenue functions through the Customs, Excise and Income Tax divisions. Income Tax Division is headed by BCS (Taxation) and Customs and Excise Division is headed by BCS (Customs and Excise) cadre. Apart from that there are two more departments namely IT Department and Statistics and Research Department. Under Tax Zone-1, Dhaka, 22 Deputy Tax Commissioner's Offices (Circle Offices) are engaged in income tax assessment and tax collection. 4 Range Offices under the management of Additional/Joint Commissioner of Taxes oversee the activities of the Circle Office. The office of the tax commissioner controls the activities of these offices.
